Apple Chips

applechips

Au natural, or sprinkled with a touch of cinnamon-sugar, you decide.  After pulling a couple sheet pans of these apple chips out of the oven and discovering their crispy, sweet-tart deliciousness, I’m embarrassed to admit I ever purchased apple chips.  Consider also the delightful baking aroma and good-for-you-snack quality…you just have to do it!

(Great as a snack, but try it as a garnish for soup (apple-cauliflower) or coleslaw and pulled pork.)

Apple Chips

Ingredients

  • apples
  • slice of lemon or lime
  • cinnamon-sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
  2. Slice the apples as thinly as possible. (I imagined using a mandoline, but my apples were too wide to fit and I didn't want to cut them. Guess what? Using a chef's knife works just fine.)
  3. Place the apples in a single layer on a parchment (or Silpat) lined baking sheet, rub each apple slice with the lemon (or lime), and pop the pan in the oven for an hour.
  4. After an hour, flip the apple slices over, sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar, if you wish, and bake for an additional 15 - 30 minutes, until crisp.
